The COVID-19 crisis has led to a surge in interest in plants and herbs that can boost health. In Thailand there has been huge interest and demand for Faa Talai Jon (Andrographis paniculata) which has been found to reduce COVID-19 symptoms. Another medicinal herb that is booming is medical Cannabis which was legalized in Thailand in 2018.
These developments are of great interest to organic farmers as herbs fit well in organic farming systems being well-adapted as good companion crops and with the market demanding organic production for herbs.
This Meet Up explores the wonderful world of herbs and shares some innovative business possibilities in 3 talks:
-Yoke and Michael Commons have been developing a biodiverse “Wanakaset” forest garden, applying traditional knowledge using herbs and plants to make products for health and daily needs, like mosquito repellent, cough medicine, soaps and shampoos. This has become a viable eco-social enterprise “You Sabai Garden.” They will talk about BOTANICALS FOR SELF-RELIANCE.
-Om Sunisa Jamwiset Deiters, the co-founder of Gaia Ashram will talk about herb extracting for medicine, food and good health, share about essential oil distillation and her family’s dream and effort to create a small business with the concept of "from seed to products" and "from diversity to diversity." She will talk about UNLOCKING THE POWER OF BOTANICALS.
-Olga Vita is a health coach who has been studying and practicing naturopathy in Europe, Asia and North America for the last 20 years. She will talk about “CULINARY BOTANICALS. How to have fun with herbs in your kitchen and upgrade any familiar dish to an immune superfood”. PDF Resources you can request at vitaolga7@gmail.com Olga’s good friend Sivaporn Bess Lamjitkusol, aka Auntie Bess, a regenerative farmer, will help to communicate the ideas in Thai. Auntie Bess has an organic, permaculture farm, rich in cultivated & wild biodiversity in Chanthaburi.
*It will be hosted by Bronwen Evans who also grows many diverse herbs and plants at her Chanthaburi Faasai Resort and Spa and farm.
